BPA (Bisphenol-A) has been causing quite a bluster lately—enough that three states, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Delaware have moved to phase it out of baby bottle manufacturing, according to the Daily Green. And it's the right move. BPA has been found to foster a slew of harmful effects, which are especially acute in young children: it's been linked to breast cancer, early puberty, hormone trouble and low semen count in males, and may, quite literally make people stupid and depressed. BPA has already been blacklisted in Canada, and many scientists have raised troubling questions about the chemical's use.
Let's Fight BPA
So it's unanimous: BPA is bad news. But what can you do to help stop the production of the dangerous chemical? Well, first of all, detox your home and get rid of any products made with BPA. And don't support the companies who continue to use it in their products. It's tough sometimes—even the environmentalists’ favorite water bottle brand Nalgene makes bottles with BPA (though they're phasing it out, too). But there are plenty who don't—try Tappening if you're in the market for a BPA-free bottle.
To get proactive, write to your state legislator to try to persuade them to join the BPA boycott, or sign an anti-BPA petition. Some have been circulating for over a year.
The fight to stop BPA is a worthy one—the chemical is deeply ingrained in many consumer products, and the sooner we all act to remove it, the safer we'll all be.
