Leave Your Scrap Food Outside for Birds

There's no need to add your food to a landfill if a bird can eat it, right?

Throwing away food drives me absolutely crazy. Of course it sometimes seems unavoidable, but being green is all about conserving. I believe in using food the best we can. Letting our food wind up in a landfill is saddening considering all of the people and animals that could have used that food to nourish their bodies had it been disposed of in a different way.

Growing up, my mom was always good about leaving our scrap food out for the birds in their feeders. Whether you're in the middle of a huge city or in the country, you can probably find some space for a bird feeder.

Birds, believe it or not, can consume a lot of our spare food if we just grind it up a bit. Before you contribute any of the following items from your kitchen to a landfill, consider placing them outside for the birds to eat:

Tips: Fresh foods will always be better. Avoid seasonings, especially salt. Keep in mind that a lot of food is suitable not only for birds, but other wildlife if it is fresh and untreated. Composting is great, but if you don't use a composter, at least try to figure out a way to pass your spare food onto the animals around you.
